Asphalt concrete, also called blacktop or pavement, is a type of concrete used to surface the ground of high-traffic and high-load areas.

Examples of common uses include outdoor school play areas, airport tarmac, and roads.

Asphalt can be specially made for wherever it will be placed, but generally all tarmac is made to have a non-slip texture. For instance, tarmac for airports will be heavily slip-resistant. Roads will be specialized to reduce noise and reduce wear on car tires.

This type of concrete can also be painted. White and yellow are commonly used for roads, airport tarmac, and school blacktops.

My neighborhood needed some asphalt cleaning. I called Milpitas Concrete and they came that day, and were able to clean it. The road is now fresh and looks like it was just laid out. The thing is it has been here for over a decade.

Asphalt Cleaning and Repair in Milpitas, CA

Asphalt needs regular cleaning and maintenance check-ups. While the time between maintenance checks varies due to environment (colder, wetter weather will warrant more checks, as well as heavier traffic or a high amount of traffic), a good rule of thumb is to get maintenance checks once a year.

We offer maintenance check-ups, general maintenance, repair, and cleaning.

How is it made?

Pavement can be specially made to maximize or minimize certain qualities, like slip-resistance or sound reverberation. Our concrete contractor first acquires the actual mixture, which is a combination of minerals and the bitumen, which is a gooey, petroleum-based substance.

Then, after removal of all of the material where the asphalt is to be laid, contractors slope the foundation so that the finished product is graded in a way that maximizes drainage - moisture is the biggest killer of all types of concrete. As a matter of fact, this job is actually called concrete finishing and we may send a specialized finisher to make doubly-sure that the sloping and grading is appropriate for the site, but this depends on the challenges of said site.

The sub-base is then placed underneath the site, for which temperature resistance, thickness, stability, and compaction are extremely important. We take careful detail to create a sub-foundation that resists cold winters (if needed), absorbs vibrations, sits still and cohesive, and is supportive of the respective weight and speed for the loads traveling on it. If the sub-foundation is not perfect, pavement will not be a good long-term investment, which is why you must pick your concrete contractor well. While we do operate every day of the year, we understand that, especially for roads and tarmacs, emergency service is sometimes needed - this is something we offer.

After the sub-base step, another step is taken to make sure it has the correct strength (yes - the sub-base is very important). Two methods include proof-rolling and undercutting. Despite the names, our professionals really are just making absolute sure that the pavement is ready for placement. After this, 'soft spots' are located and repaired, and a binder layer is placed to strengthen the base. This is what makes your asphalt really, really durable and strong.

After this, the mixture is laid. The mixture comes out jet-black. If you've ever seen roadwork done, this is what you are seeing: a deep, shiny black that emits a unique smell. Transitions and joints to other roads/areas are then added. These are simply the spots where one stretch of pavement leads to another, and the separation should not be visible. An more important part of this step than how it looks is making even more sure that drainage is efficient, because cracks at transitions can be much, much worse and more dangerous than cracks on the main tarmac.

After all of this, a roller truck compacts and smooths the surface. Over time, the intensity of the black fades to dark gray.

After this is done, the blacktop is laid and ready for traffic and painting. Click to call our concrete and asphalt contractors today for your free quote, plus your own free bonus coupon!
